Athens’ first tequila and mezcal bar, Barro Negro is also a passion project brought to life by two friends and their love of Mexico and agave spirits, George Kavaklis and Stelios Papadopoulos. Years of expertise as bartenders, coupled with extensive studies of the category and travels across Mexico, have resulted into the opening of a bar whose mission is to shift the misconceptions around tequila and mezcal. Launched in 2019, Barro Negro Athens has quickly climbed the rankings of the most sough-after lists and awards in the global drinks industry and has been ranked #52 in the world’s 50 best bars in 2022. An extensive list of tequilas and mezcals showcased through innovative creations that are rooted in the team’s knowledge of mixology and agave, have made Barro Negro an authentic and authoritative representative of modern Mexico. With a cohesive team of young and driven bar professionals, the two co-founders have successfully brought the contagious energy of the streets of Oaxaca and Tequila to the very heart of Athens.
