Barro Negro is Athens’ first tequila and mezcal bar, created as a passion project by two friends, George Kavaklis and Stelios Papadopoulos. Their shared love for Mexico and agave spirits, combined with years of experience as bartenders and extensive studies of the category, led to the opening of the bar. Their travels across Mexico further influenced their vision.
Launched in 2019, Barro Negro has quickly gained recognition in the global drinks industry. It has ranked among the top 100 bars on the World’s 50 Best Bars list for four years in a row–ranking no.68 in 2024. The bar’s extensive selection of tequilas and mezcals is showcased through creative and innovative cocktails rooted in the team’s deep knowledge of mixology and agave spirits. With a dynamic team of young, driven professionals, Barro Negro brings the lively energy of Oaxaca and Tequila to the heart of Athens, offering an authentic and authoritative representation of modern Mexican drinking culture.
Currently, the team’s main focus is Academia de Barro Negro, an educational project dedicated to sharing knowledge about agave spirits and Mexican culture. It has contributed to the education of many enthusiasts, with its highlight being Barro Negro’s first educational trip to Mexico in January 2025, offering a hands-on experience in agave production, traditions, and the stories behind the industry.
